PRILIMINARY REPORT ON COLLAPSED 1-STOREY BUILDING AT NO 98 ISHAGA ROAD, IDIARABA LAGOS STATE

COREN -ERM Team paid a visit to the collapsed building located at No 98 Ishaga road, opposite Central Mosque, Idiaraba Lagos State.

The visitation was to afford the team the opportunity to have an on-the-site assessment of the incident of collapse of 1-storey building which occurred around 3:50pm on Sunday 18th of May, 2025.

The rescue of the trapped victims has been completed by Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, (LASEMA) and Lagos Building Control Agency (LASBCA) have cordoned the site off from general public.

Remarks from the People around the site

The Traders around the collapsed building confirmed that the construction of the building was ongoing, when the collapse happened in the afternoon with a sudden noise arising from the failure of the building. Some workers on site were trapped during the incident, one was brought out dead, while the injured ones were quickly moved to the hospital for treatment.

Casualty: Eye witness report one deaths casualties while three injured persons were rescued and taken to the hospital.

Observations from the Collapse Site: – 

  1. The building was inadequately reinforced
  2. The structural members of the building were weak; hence it collapsed.
  3. There was poor workmanship, many of the plumbing and electrical pipes were passed through the beam
  4. The Owner and the Supervisors were yet to be ascertained.
  5. Physical observation of materials on site shows poor concrete mixtures of some concrete members used for the construction.
  6. The was no project sign board on the site

RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION

  1. The State Government should ensure that Integrity test (NDT) is carried out on the existing structures within the vicinity of the incident.
  • The Lagos State Agency responsible for building inspection (LASBCA) should be empowered and structured to work in collaboration with the COREN-ERM Committee to carry out regular/ routine monitoring inspections and enforcements of regulations on structural/other Building engineering projects in the State.
  • COREN should create more awareness to enable the Public and Developers know the importance of registered Engineering Practitioners and Firms. COREN could make Jingles on danger in patronizing quacks/how to verify Engineering Practitioners’ and Firms
